The gnome splash doesn"t support real transparency, you can only used
the transparency as a mask like the gif transparency.

So, if you want a splash with corner the transparency of the pixel MUST
be 0, and 255 for an opaque pixel.

Actually, borders and corners are "antialiased" and the transparency is
between 1 and 254, in these cases, the splash renderer displayed these
pixels as black pixels
