I would also like to have such an option, because it is extremely
difficult to disable PulseAudio completely. For example Ryhthmbox does
not seem to honor the Alsa setting in the Multimedia Preferences dialog
and always plays through PulseAudio. Also the default output for Alsa is
changed to PulseAudio so that all apps need to be configured explicitly
to use another Alsa device than the default for direct output.

There are a lot of problems with PulseAudio, it seems that quite a few
people have crackling sounds, echoes etc (including me). I already
reported this when I upgraded to Karmic, but I got no reply other than
people stating they have the same problem. As the problems even
persists in the latest PulseAudio from the Lucid Alpha, I currently have
no hope that this will be fixed soon and would like to get rid of
PulseAudio.
