Dear Sebastien, I am happy to plead Mea Culpa any day as I may not know how I have caused the problem and I understand that you reject the report of the bug.
>From my perspective I have only used Synaptic Package Manager and have not been experimenting with any packages I might get on the internet. I have never even run apt-**** from the terminal until I hit the problem. The only software not installed from Synaptic was Zend Studio 5.5 and that should not have installed this package. I have now de-installed Zend and the problem remains. Now that I am where I am I would like to ask for an answer to 2 quick questions: 1. Will you be able to help me - give instructions - to reverse the problem Y/N will do...? 2. If it is a no, do I blow away the system and reinstall the system from scratch as the only resonable way of reversing the problem?
