Public bug reported:

I do use thunderbird, but I actually believe this is related to some
lower level library. I also installed Chromium some time ago, which only
stopped working this morning after I installed another linux image
package (I don't know which one). This goes for a lot of network
applications, including xchat-gnome for example (which says "Transport
endpoint is already connected") when trying to connect to
irc.freenode.net. xchat-gnome even gives this message after a reboot of
the machine, in case you were thinking of a typical PEBKAC.

 dpkg -l | grep linux-image
ii linux-image-2.6.31-14-generic 2.6.31-14.48
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.31 on x86
ii linux-image-2.6.31-15-generic 2.6.31-15.50
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.31 on x86
ii linux-image-2.6.31-16-generic 2.6.31-16.53
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.31 on x86
ii linux-image-2.6.31-17-generic 2.6.31-17.54
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.31 on x86
ii linux-image-generic 2.6.31.17.30
                          Generic Linux kernel image

Firefox also stopped working with the default configuration for the
proxy (The gnome configuration).

With the actual network I am on there is nothing wrong, since I tried it
on another machine which is in the same LAN, where it does work.
