To reproduce, just reinstall one of the xfonts-packages like xfonts-base or xfonts-dpi100. All currently open terminals will change their colors. This will also trigger bug #507263 ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/507263 ).
