Thanks Jean-Baptiste but I found the error after scratching my head for
a while. It was a stupid oversight on my part
Essentially there was an incorrect character in the Deb command for a
third party software source. Edited the /etc/apt/sources list and all
was well. Took me a while to figure it though.

Blame it on being tired - I'd ditched Karmic that day as it was totally
unstable on my computer. I'd tried about 15 fresh installs and had a bug
every time. Just a different one to the last one I'd solved.

Jaunty 9.04 runs beautifully and I'd recommend that anyone failing with
Karmic to back-step to Jaunty. [Just a personal opinion of mine and
nothing to do with the fantastic Linux comm.]
