I've done more research and found that this problem in one form or
another (touchpad recognized as wheel mouse on various machines with
various linux versions) goes back years - some reports date to 2006. I
don't know quite what to make of that yet, being new to Linux, but this
report should probably be marked as a duplicate of e.g. 418282, which
describes the problem with Asus machines and Elantech touchpads. That
report also indicates that using tpconfig to determine the touchpad type
is useless, so in fact despite a lot of searching I don't really know
what kind of touchpad I have nor how to go about determining it. I know
that this problem affects other Acer 5738 users, as I've seen recent
Ubuntu forum posts about it, but no one seemed to have reported it as a
bug.
