The Ubuntu project is far too casual about this data loss bug! If it's not going to get fixed (and given the age of this bug, it appears that it won't) then at least remove the mp3 pipelines from the default Ubuntu install. A computer should never lie to the user about what's happening.
(I just ripped a 15 CDs on Karmic using the default CD Quality MP3 setting and only discovered this bug by chance. Sure enough, everything's 128 bit. Now I get to re-rip them all.
