I have on Feisty Fawn Herd 5 live CD, after a failed X start a similar problem.
The text mode dialog border is garbled. ("Failed to start the X serve...")
The left and and right border should be a vertical line, like "|" , but it is 3
characters, similar to "ÉlX" (the second one is a small ell I think; the X also
has a vertical line like "|" through it;)
Looks like an UTF-8 related encoding mismatch.
