I booted the release Karmic Live-CD and it was able to return from suspend, however it took quite some time and I had a kernel oops to report with apport when the UI came back. Looks to be a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/417842 for which a recent fix has been released.
This is my wife's (Windows) computer and she never allows me to install anything.
