Just (clean) installed Ubuntu Feisty which has Firefox 2.0.0.2 by default. Can still reproduce. Did the following:
Go to EDIT --> PREFERENCES --> TABS New pages should be opened in a new tab was already selected by default. So... Go to google.co.uk, click on preferences, tell it open search results in a new browser window. Save the changes. Search for any gibberish; choose the first result shown it loads in a new windows! Go back to Edit --> Preferences --> Tabs: Open in new tab radio button is still selected. Select the New Window radio button, the re-select New Tab radio button. Close Preferences, choose another link from google and it will load in a new tab as it should have done in the first place.
