Where do you see that this is related to 3d operations? I don't think a kernel-level dri freeze can reasonably be considered a mesa bug in any case.
I'm now running lucid on this laptop and have not seen this freeze with the current 2.6.32 kernel; that also means I'm unlikely to invest any time into retesting with karmic.
