I should think this is a valid note to raise. As for a signifier to replace the brackets, the GNOME user guide says that minimized window buttons are supposed to appear faded, although it would ppear this functionality is not currently implemented. http://library.gnome.org/users/user-guide/stable/windowlist.html.en
