Confirming on Ubuntu 9.10 amd64 with a WinXP and a Win7 guest.
The guest systems freeze for half a minute evey 10-15 seconds, which renders
them completely unusable.

It seems to be a kernel issue (CONFIG_HZ), see here:
http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/5501
also here: http://marcosaruj.com/archives/382

Another page discusses possible (non-working for me) work-arounds:
http://it.newinstance.it/2009/11/29/virtualbox-intermittent-freezes-in-karmic-ubuntu-910/

Right now, VirtualBox is broken for me in Karmic.
I really don't want to downgrade to 2.6.28, but this seems like that's the only
option (or using a rt kernel, makes no difference since I jump out of the
update mechanism and only gain more maintenance work :\ ).
qemu/kvm works without freezing, but audio doesn't work and the graphics
performance is crawling.
