You generally can't revert due to serious changes in the kernel wifi
infrastructure.  Sometimes installing linux-backports-modules-karmic
will do the trick as this brings in even newer drivers from even newer
kernel versions.  (It does currently contain updated drivers and
microcode for this wireless chipset.)

And forget about embarrassing.  There are huge numbers of bugs
constantly reported against Ubuntu that receive no attention and are
just left open for years.  Nobody at Ubuntu appears to care.  (I had two
of crashing on startup programs that were one line fixes, confirmed in
bug trackers of other Linux distros etc, and sat through at least 4
Ubuntu releases the last I checked!)
