I have a similar problem, trying to load ReactOS in QEMU- running from
the command line, I get an error that qemu cannot open /dev/kqemu, which
doesn't exist.  This is apparently the acceleration layer, and it
appears that the Ubuntu build puts this somewhere other than where QEMU
would like to find it.  I have run in to a similar problem with Ubuntu
mounting the usb file system on what appears to be a non-standard mount
point (easy enough to fix when you know what the problem is).  I have
tried this in both Jaunty and Karmic, with the same results...
