Dear Cristian Aravena Romero: I was finally able to install Ubuntu on the same hard drive.
What I eventually did was attempt installation of Windows XP and that succeeded. I then tried Ubuntu 6.10 again and it worked. I looked at the existing install logs and did not see a single entry containing the dates of my attempts. I was quite confused but I think the attempt to install FreeBSD Unix somehow blocked my attempts to install Ubuntu.
