I tried to rebuild the customised live/install CD from the latest lucid repos this morning (12/23/2009) , and I no longer see the issue with hanging at the "Starting init crypto disks ..."
The automatic installation went OK, but when running live cd, it asked for login as indicated in starslight's message, and it did not let me log in ... Thanks.
