I have just tried this with my wife's phone, a Sony Ericsson K800i, and I have a similar but not identical problem.
After connecting, logs show see several "devices" with increasing serial numbers being attached. After a minute or two the system tells me that I have a music player (offering to run Rhythmbox) and a camera (offering to run F-spot) If I allow it to run F-spot and select import, there is another delay of a minute or so. But after that it does actually seem to import successfully. So the similarity is the 7 retries at 30 second intervals allocating new device numbers. The difference is that I *can* actually get to the device eventually.
