I have the same problem with Fedora 12 (updated, kernel 2.6.31.6-166.fc12.i686.PAE) on the hp compaq elitebook 2530p.
It seems to be working better after adding the parameter "nomodeset" at the end of the kernel line in /boot/grub/grub.conf.
