more info: the same cd-r will boot fine in P4 with the cd writer which wrote it.
back on the P3 w/ cdrom drive running (oh, old RH 7.2) I can do dd if=/dev/hdc of=x-hdc and it completes with error on /dev/hdc; I can see seek incomplete in /var/log/messages; however the result output x-hdc file is 732293120 bytes long which is the exact length of the original iso file and a md5sum of it results in the correct md5 checksum for the ubuntu 6.10 desktop iso. So all the data is on the cdrom and is readable with this cdrom drive, just not past the end... -- 6.10 desktop boot cdrom: buffer i/o error hdc (near end of cdrom) https://launchpad.net/bugs/88819 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
