Public bug reported: I have a Canon PowerShot A430 camera, with a USB cable to download photos.
It worked absolutely fine with my old system: * EPIA VIA motherboard, Ubunty Hardy 32-bit However it does not work at all with my new system: * Dell Zino HD, Ubuntu Karmic 64-bit In the old system the camera would be detected, it would offer to launch the default photo app (gthumb), and I could import from there. In the new system it won't even attach as a USB device. Here's what I see when I plug it in: Dec 21 20:24:20 zino kernel: [46280.410027] usb 3-2: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 3 Dec 21 20:24:20 zino kernel: [46280.617708] usb 3-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice Dec 21 20:24:21 zino kernel: [46281.021747] usb 1-4.1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 9 Dec 21 20:24:51 zino kernel: [46311.481035] usb 1-4.1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 10 Dec 21 20:25:21 zino kernel: [46341.940328] usb 1-4.1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 11 Dec 21 20:25:32 zino kernel: [46352.290857] usb 1-4.1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 12 Dec 21 20:25:50 zino kernel: [46370.941017] usb 1-4.1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 13 Dec 21 20:26:21 zino kernel: [46401.400798] usb 1-4.1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 14 Dec 21 20:26:51 zino kernel: [46431.862093] usb 1-4.1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 15 Dec 21 20:27:02 zino kernel: [46442.210750] usb 1-4.1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 16 Dec 21 20:29:19 zino kernel: [46579.821533] usb 3-2: USB disconnect, address 3 Note that every 30 seconds it appears to detect a "new" device and assign it another number. Eventually when I switch it off, or it powers off by itself, then you get the last message. if I type 'lsusb' in a console window while this is going on, it just hangs. So I can't get any indication of the device at all. If I run F-spot and Import then after a while I get "Canon PowerShot A430 (PTP mode)" offered as a source, but after selecting it the window goes grey for a while, and then I get "Error connecting to camera // Received error "Could not lock the device" while connecting to camera" in a dialog box. Other USB peripherals I've tried work fine in this system: I've successfully used a LiteOn DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive, an external USB hard drive, and a Samsung YP-U3 mp3 player with UMS firmware. Here are some more logs from powering up the camera again...
