I can telnet into the system with the frozen UI and nothing looks at all unusual. top shows everything running fine, with the various processes as idle as you would expect when no input can get into the processes from the keyboard or mouse. When the freeze occurs the only thing I can do to recover is sudo reboot.
I have examined the logs and from my limited experience of linux I can see nothing whatsoever out of the ordinary. In the main message log, for example there are typically no messages whatsoever for several HOURS prior to the message generated by the sudo reboot command.
