OK, what I wrote above is partly false. I had forgot that under Jaunty, to make sensors work I had run https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/HPdv5z#CPU%20Temperature .
However: - the linked procedure stopped fixing the issue in Karmic (sensor don't work, and if I get a dump of the DSDT table and decompile it I see it's still the original - maybe something changed in update-initramfs) - I'm quite certain that at least in Intrepid, the sensors did work (out of the box).
