FWLIW, I have my printer configed through CUPS and it prints
nicely
from Xfce and it's associated apps. This is on FC5 so that might be
significant.

The above is very strongly pointing to an issue with Xubuntu and
not
Xfce. They built the packages wrong or something so if you could file a
bug report with them then you would be informed when the bug is fixed.
The bug is most definitely not with the Xfce code.
