sudo apt-get install devicekit-power and then edit: /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.devicekit.power.policy as shown in the post from stacktracer. That works on my Karmic machine, but i have no idea if the fix works out of the box on a new/clean Karmic install.
