I've found that the problem doesn't occur while running XFCE - I
installed xubuntu-desktop and with no change to my hardware I've had no
recurrence of the problem.  So much for the idea that it's a hardware
issue.

Is there a way I could try out the GNOME components one at a time to
identify the source of the problem?
