I have exactly the same problem in all the other player (Mplayer, Kaffeine...).
I had another problem with VLC, which crash just after having been started by
double-clicking.

So it must be a "global" issue (I probably miss something or have a bad
setting).

Nonetheless, I managed to play the file with VLC with the images and the
sound by making a small (but annoying) setting.

I launch VLC with the terminal, go the Tools > Settings.
I have unchecked the option called "Integrate the vidéo in the interface" (or
sthg like that, I have it in French, sorry).
And that works !

I hope this clue will help you to find what's bad with my Kubuntu.

(
I precise that I have nvidia-glx-180 installed.
I also have Cairo-Dock + OpenGL launched at startup. This might be the source
of the issue. Let's see this page
http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?pid=3107919
