Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

A maqqef is found at unicode position 05BE.

Open Office Writer v3.1.1 with Karmic Koala (Netbook Remix) fails to
display the maqqef correctly. The maqqef is used to mark some prefixing
words in Hebrew. It should look a bit like a dash, flush with the tops
of the block letters. Such as:

טוֹב הַאוֹר מִן־הַחֹשֶׁךְ

Entering a maqqef in Writer, however, causes the prefixing word to be
displayed over to the right of the last space, often overlapping with
the word before. You can recreate this bug by copying and pasting the
Hebrew text above into Writer, and it will looking something like this,
which is the best approximation I can manage here:

טוֹב הַאוֹרמִן־ הַחֹשֶׁךְ

I've tested this with Ezra SIL, FreeSerif, and SBL Hebrew. Making
paragraphing marks visible, I'm able to see that Writer knows there
should be a space before the מִן־ and that there is no spacing mark
after it.

Entering Hebrew text into Firefox (in order to file this bug report), or
into Gedit (which I use for writing documents in LaTeX) works
flawlessly.

There has been the beginnings of a discussino about this with another scholar
working with Hebrew, though, the responses of "just use Microsoft Word" are
never the most encouraging ones to hear on those sorts of forums!
