I agree with Tony Butler.
I have the same problem on a Toshiba Satellite P100 laptop which could be 
easily solved by loading a custom DSDT.
Unfortunately Toshiba does not do anything about it and therefore I have to 
find another solution! (and therefore in the future I will never buy a Toshiba 
anymore)

Unfortunately the decision taken by Kubuntu community to not allow to load 
custom DSDT leads to force users (like me) to find other solutions (maybe 
change the distribution).
Consider also that many users choose kubuntu (or ubuntu) to not waste their 
time on rebuilding and reconfiguring softwares and therefore building our 
kernel should not be a solution.
