My Mint8 (derived of course from Ubuntu) is on sdd my fourth drive and I installed Grub2 to the mbr on sda, where XP lives. All my drives are PATA after Legacy Grub had problems with a mix of PATA and SATA. This works but gives the long dwell on Grub Loading, about four minutes in my case. I then tried the trick of installing Grub2 to the mbr of sdd and switched the bios drive priority. The boot time is reduced to a few seconds although the time to act on a menu selection is too long (10-12 seconds). However in this state it won't boot Windows XP complaining that it can't find the device with the listed uuid. A bit more Googling and it seems others have this problem but have no reason for it. The solution may be to insert the old drive notation rather than the uuid in grub.cfg (or the approved .d or .40 file?) taking care I suppose to use the new Grub2 labelling. Haven't tried that yet but I may do. On the other hand I may just go back to Legacy Grub. It does seem for multidrive systems Mint8 (Ubuntu) with Grub2 is a disaster. Tony
