After installing 9.10 on my acer extensa 5635z I was not able to get things working with the i915.modeset=0 option (unlike using the live cd which worked for me) I decided that I would give 10.04 alpha1 a shot and there it was fixed for me. 8.04.3 didn't work either... (didn't try 9.04)
