I'll try the Lucid kernel as soon as possible.
In the meantime, I found a fix that works for kernels < 2.6.32:
create a file /etc/modprobe.d/ath5k.conf and add:
"options ath5k nohwcrypt=1"

this seems to fix my issues.

One interesting thing: my ath5k card worked fine with an upstream
2.6.32rc3, but with later rc's i also needed the workaround mentioned
above.
