I get the same, and although I can't reproduce it it seems to be related
to unminimizing Opera (10.10&karmic). When it happens, I log on a
console (ctrl-alt-F2) and kill opera manually. Going back to GNOME
(alt-F7), everything works again. Strangely, often a GNOME help window
is popping up after doing that. Don't ask why. Very annoying!
