Not sure is this is the same thing since my issue is persistent. Moving your 
finger across the pad works fine for long strokes, however rolling your finger 
is erratic and annoying. Placing the finger on the pad and instead of moving 
your hand with finger stiff in place to drag the mouse, tilt your hand so your 
finger rolls up or down and the touchpad may or may not move the mouse. The 
subtle change isn't picked up by the touchpad. This makes catching the edge of 
windows for resizing very difficult without a really steady hand. 
Other synaptic pads also using Ubuntu work normally using this method. I only 
noticed this when I began using a Macbook that I just installed 8.10 on. 

There seems to be something in the sensitivity settings that doesn't
respond properly to small movements. I'm wondering if it has something
to do with the touchpad being almost twice as large (larger surface
area) as other laptop touchpads. It's large enough to make a stylus
driven wacom like tablet out of it.
