I see the same happening here: fully updated (dec. 4 2009) 64 bit Kubuntu Karmic on AMD, NVIDIA 190.42 binary driver from nvidia web site. Kubuntu with KDM. No problems when GDM is used. console login with startx works flawlessly. Kernel version 2.6.31-16-generic. Quickly selecting "console" from the "Low resolution" dialog also lets KDE start properly here.
