It might just be my subjective impression but it seems that the issue got slightly better with the regular updates. Though it becoming better it's still far from being fixed so I ultimately decided to turn compiz effects off. Seems to be a real tricky issue as this happens in different environments and with different symptoms. (e.g. for me, flickering happens using the notebook's LCD or see also Rohan Agrawal's identical bug)
