I am experiencing what seems to be the same problem: after upgrade from Jaunty to Karmic problems booting due to missing device nodes for some partitions on sda.
With kernel 2.6.31-15, unable to mount any partitions. Falling back to kernel 2.6.28-16, my primary partitions do not have device nodes; extended partitions show up. My root happens to be there, so I'm able to boot after moving/boot, but still can't mount primary partitions. key clue seems to be error message from udev on console preceeding failure: inotify_add_watch(6, (null), 10): failed: bad address. other clues: udev version: 147~-6.1 kernel detects: [ 4.212168] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] 390721968 512-byte hardware sectors: (200 GB/186 GiB) [ 4.212182] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Write Protect is off [ 4.212185] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00 [ 4.212202] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA [ 4.212261] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] 390721968 512-byte hardware sectors: (200 GB/186 GiB) [ 4.212273] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Write Protect is off [ 4.212276] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00 [ 4.212291] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA [ 4.212296] sda: sda1 sda2 sda3 < sda5 sda6 sda7 sda8 > [ 4.268812] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Attached SCSI disk /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, /dev/sda3 do not get created: ls -la /dev/sda* brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 0 2009-12-04 12:38 /dev/sda brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 5 2009-12-04 12:38 /dev/sda5 brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 6 2009-12-04 20:38 /dev/sda6 brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 7 2009-12-04 12:38 /dev/sda7 brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 8 2009-12-04 20:38 /dev/sda8 -- Kernel detects internal SATA HDD but udev doesn't make nodes, system unbootable https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/488668 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
