I am experiencing what seems to be the same problem: after upgrade from
Jaunty to Karmic problems booting due to missing device nodes for some
partitions on sda.

With kernel 2.6.31-15, unable to mount any partitions. Falling back to
kernel 2.6.28-16,  my primary partitions do not have device nodes;
extended partitions show up. My root happens to be there, so I'm able
to boot after moving/boot, but still can't mount primary partitions.

key clue seems to be error message from udev on console preceeding failure:
 inotify_add_watch(6, (null), 10): failed: bad address.

other clues:
udev version: 147~-6.1
