Public bug reported: Binary package hint: openoffice.org
The help for vlookup says for the 4th parameter: in unordered lists the searched value must match exact. In OOo trailing spaces are not taken into account. This is not bad on its own, but is an incomptibility to MS-office, so tables safed as .xls look fine in OOo but fail in ms-office. In the attached file the value "ref2 " at cell A7 has a trailing space, the searchvalue in A20 has not. In OOo displayes a non-error-result in cell F20, while ms-office displayesa #NV value. I filed this against OpenOffice.org directly in bug <http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=107380>. The answer was: You can configure OOo what kind of "exact" you want to use. Goto Tools > Options > Calc > Calculate. Check the item "Search criteria and <> must apply to whole cells" to get the same behavior as Excel. I tested this with the windows version and they are true. But with OpenOffice.org (same build: 9420) on ubuntu the "Search criteria and <> must apply to whole cells" option has no effect on the example file, so I think it a ubuntu specific bug.
