okey. i don't really know about the default compositing... only that after a fresh install, the panel disappeared, so i removed compositing from metacity through gconf-editor... and i hadn't enabled it myself... i'm gonna enable compositing in metacity now and have a look at the logs and see if i can get something useful from them..
