I share your frustration that not everything can be opened without
additional packages.

As far as I know what can and can't be opened automatically largely
depends on whether or not the compression format is properly licensed
(open source vs proprietary).

p7zip is great at opening just about everything, but if this includes
proprietary code then it can't be used as part of a default install.

Could possibly be a candidate for the "restricted extras" package...

Anyone else have a thought on this......
