never mind. my system still freezes even after disabling Visual Effects (compiz). i am using amd's ati video driver: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx (see my implementation: http://nickhumphrey.net/showthread.php?p=3345)
