Hi seasoned_geek First of all; thank you for reporting this bug and your following effort on tracing down the problem. I do appreciate that; most of our users would have stopped at the first problem without as much as even considering to report it. So truly thank you for that.
I have not actually tried to reproduce the problem but I know from memory that at least a subset of the listed plug-ins are not indeed not present in any eclipse 3.5.1 package in Ubuntu (because they are on our todo list) and would not be the least surprised if indeed all of them were missing. As for your "503" error when accessing links beneath http://www.w3.org/TR/: this is intentionally done by w3.org based on the user-agent contacting the site; therefore most browsers will be allowed to view it; however programs that fails certain features (such as caching) are banned from w3.org. I am not sure there is much I (or the rest of the eclipse team for that matter) can do about it. Nevertheless, back to your original problem - namely the missing plug-ins; eclipse.org offers 10 different downloads on their main download page. I believe we have packed the "eclipse classic" download (near the bottom of [1]) - we did not choose "classic" because we believe that is all there is to eclipse; but because rules dictates that packages in Ubuntu should be compiled from source and this is the one eclipse offers as it "source" download. In short - all of the files you are missing there (possible short of the first 5 or so) are what eclipse.org considers "non-classic" features which we have to package separately. We intend to package a lot of plug-ins once we are done getting eclipse itself to behave - we are still experiencing some problems here and there on the packager side. If you are interested we have a list of plug-ins we have already written on our todo list at [2] - I do not mind adding the ones you are missing here to that list. A final note: I read your "comment#2" shortly after it was posted - after which I spent the better of 40 minutes convincing myself that you were venting your own frustration over the problem itself; and that you were not angry with me nor the eclipse team itself. Finally I decided to sleep on it before I posted here this morning - I would have loved answer you 10 hours ago; but I deemed myself too upset to do so. If you found anything in this post offending - please know it was not my intentions and please do point out the statements, so that I can avoid them in the future.
