Got this one sorted. Connection to network is fine with both Network
Manager and WICD if you select a static IP. The fault would seem to be
not with either package but elsewhere in Ubuntu unless they contain the
same bug which seems highly unlikely. My setting are in IPv4.

address: 192.168.1.50 (three Ubuntu machines at 50, 51 and 52 to keep
out of the way of the dynamic IP stuff which are always in the 30s)

netmask: 255.255.255.0 (setting taken from the forums)

gateway: 192.168.1.1 (the IP of my router)

DNS server: 192.168.1.1 (again)

search domains: blank (you may have to put something in, then remove it
to be able to click "apply")

WICD also needs DNS1 which is 192.168.1.1 again.

This is probably obvious stuff to you guys but for someone like me for
whom 9.10 is the first step into Ubuntu, it was by no means so obvious.
