Thanks for your reply Mario. This had been happening for over a week. Waited through a couple of updates before posting error (an irritating but not a catastrophic error).
After hitting apply, control-centre would churn - 20 seconds or so the error message would pop up. But ---- ran updates again yesterday (about 80 megs) and problem now appears to have resolved itself. Was able to make changes in control- centre without errors. Also, vnc server started accepting the login from my frontend. I don't see where I would mark this, but I consider it resolved.
