I am absolutely definitely firmly sure that the font bug is NOT there in gedit (Breezy, Dapper).
If gedit of Feisty exhibits this bug, then I can only assume that the GTK font rendering (Pango?) has been "mis-modified". It seems that the bug was reported in 2003 (http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=17624). The bug is due to diacritics being given non-zero widths. Should the zero-width be indicated by the fonts?
