I'm afraid the answer is no. The images will convert just fine when they are imported and converted. gscan2pdf only hangs when I scan and convert. But what is different when I scan and convert ? Tthe image is exactly the same when I import and convert. The two workarounds in comment #22 and #44 both works for me but are quite different in approach. The last mentions the resolution option in ".gscan2pdf" in your home directory, the first is about "openmp" Could it be something like gscan2pdf not handing over the resolution properly when openmp is used in imagemagick? only when scanning ofcourse.
