I've just had a hard time with automount and finaly figured out i'm not alone, This is not my only problem with automount (the other could turn out to be me), but I can confirm the the directory mountpoints in auto.master does indeed disapear. Ubuntu server Karmic (same problem before dist-upgrade on Jaunty).
