Juan of post #21: many thanks! Same problem on Toshiba Portege R600. Setting "nomodeset" as kernel parameter did the trick and made my second-monitor script combining xrandr and toshset, posted at http://www.astro.uu.nl/~rutten/Recipes_Ubuntu.html, work again. I had no idea how to set a kernel parameter but found clear instructions at http://grumpymole.blogspot.com/2007/05/ubuntu-how-to-edit-grub-boot-parameters.html
