Same problem here. This time the overlay text is about not being able to mount drives.
I changed the DefaultDepth and Depth to 24 in the /etc/xorg.conf and the machine would not reboot. Trying to edit the file through the recovery menu results in this problem. If it is any help, it happens on the third down-arrow keystroke while on the recovery menu and the machine freezes completely.
